Bowling for a Good Cause
Many of us have heard of the non-profit organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, but how much do we actually know about the work they do and the impact they have on our troubled youth? Our children today face many challenges while growing up in a large society where morals and values are often skewed. Many do not have a father or mother figure to guide them in the course of life. In fact, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, as of 2007 there were approximately 13.7 million single parents carrying the weight of raising 21.8 million children under the age of 21 in America. This doesn’t include the hardship of military families whose spouse is deployed for months at a time, leaving the other spouse to play the role of a single parent.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu, has been assisting hard-pressed families in Hawaii since 1963 with programs for the “Littles” (keiki) and guidance for the “Bigs” (mentors). The love and sacrifice come from the hearts of volunteers who literally alter the future of these children who are lost through no fault of their own. These children are raised by a caring parent who simply can’t do it alone. The efforts by staff and volunteers of Big Brothers Big Sisters show through a study that the influence of a “Big” in a “Little’s” life results in:
- Increased confidence in school performance
- Improved relationships with their families
- Greater trust in adults
- Less likelihood of skipping school, and
- Less likelihood of using drugs and/or alcohol
As a non-profit organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu relies heavily on private donations. For the past 24 years, they have been successful with their Bowl for Kid’s Sake campaign. This year their goal is to raise $300,000 to help the increasing number of children needing their assistance. Sterling & Tucker will be participating in this year’s Bowl for Kid’s Sake. We are excited to support the youth of Hawaii, keeping in step with the spirit of aloha and ohana. If you would like to support the Sterling & Tucker team with a pledge of any amount click on the link to our Bowl for Kids’ Sake donation page.
