STERLING & TUCKER NAMES 3 NEW PARTNERS
Posted On 7/15/2009
Ms. Sterling and Ms. Tucker met in 1980 as students at the William S. Richardson School of Law. Both women had already been licensed as Certified Public Accountants. The Sterling & Tucker firms they formed in 1991 number about 30 employees strong today. In this unique Hawaii firm attorneys are able to work hand-in-hand with CPAs, if requested, to help clients plan to live well and stay “rich” – preserving hard-earned wealth for future generations. Succession planning is difficult and often proves impossible for small firms. “We are pleased that Ms. Hobus, Ms. Glaus and Ms. Young-Kagamida are qualified and have stepped up to the challenge of providing business and family continuity so essential to our clients in estate preservation,” said founding partner Michelle Tucker.
The business was among the top 25 women owned businesses in 2008 and 2009, as ranked by Pacific Business News. The three new owners keep the firm predominantly women owned. “But,” adds Ms. Tucker, “the high caliber of the men in the firms adds indispensable value, and I look forward to more becoming partners in the future.” Richard J. Sakoda became the first attorney added to the team of partners in 2006.
A four year Dean’s List student, Ms. Hobus received her Bachelor of Arts degree and graduated Cum Laude in 1988 from Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA. Following college, Ms. Hobus spent a year with Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in San Francisco, living and working with homeless women and children. After completing law school, she once again worked with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, India. In 1992, Ms. Hobus received her Juris Doctor from University of San Francisco Law School. She was admitted to the California State Bar in 1992, and in 2003, to the Hawaii State Bar.
Since joining the firm in 2004, Ms. Hobus has assisted clients in preserving their financial legacies with estate and disability planning. She also intimately understands the need for planning for young families who are just starting out, or starting a family. Her focus is always client-centered, and she is a frequent presenter of Sterling and Tucker’s monthly educational seminars on Oahu and in Hilo. She continues to service clients in both areas.
Ms. Glaus graduated with her Bachelors degree from the University of Hawaii and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1994. Ms. Glaus received her law degree from Seattle University in 2000 and was admitted to practice law in Hawaii in 2000.
Since joining the Sterling & Tucker in 2003, her area of focus is Elder law dealing with issues related to disability, long-term care, Medicaid and other government benefits, taxation, business formation and real estate.
Ms. Young-Kagamida graduated from the University of Hawaii in 1989 with a Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems while also pursuing undergraduate Accounting classes. After gaining experience in accounting systems and public accounting, she became licensed as a Certified Public Accountant in 1996.
Since joining Sterling & Tucker in 1996, Ms. Young-Kagamida has worked with individual and business clients to provide income tax preparation and planning, estate tax preparation, trust accounting services and financial reporting.
